Struggle Continues for the Red Wings

Dallas Drake had a goal and two assists as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the struggling Detroit Red Wings, 6-2, on Tuesday night.

Keith Tkachuk and Jeremy Roenick each had a goal and an assist and Juha Ylonen, Teppo Numminen and Bob Corkum also scored for the Coyotes, who have won both their meetings with Detroit this season.

The Coyotes have won two straight following their first two-game losing streak of the season and have 42 points, only two behind first-place Dallas in the Pacific Division.

Brendan Shanahan had a goal and an assist and Igor Larionov scored the other goal for the Red Wings. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions have lost three straight, four of five and are 4-10 against teams with .500 or better records.

Nikolai Khabibulin made 36 saves in the Phoenix net. Detroit’s Chris Osgood had 23 stops.

The teams traded first-period goals from Larionov and Tkachuk.

Larionov took a left-circle pass from Sergei Fedorov and one-timed it past Khabibulin at 11:54. Tkachuk tied it 2:19 later by redirecting Keith Carney’s shot.
