Penalty Shot Goes Hebert’s Way

Tony Amonte’s body language was all wrong on a penalty shot with 32 seconds left in the second period of the Ducks’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. He drifted left, moved back to his right a bit, then went slowly at Duck goalie Guy Hebert.

Amonte didn’t do much with his chance , sending a weak shot into Hebert’s right pad--one of a career-high 47 saves on 50 shots.

“I knew the penalty shot was going to be a make or break play,” said Hebert, who stopped 45 of 48 shots Dec. 12, 1996 against the New York Rangers. “I knew if I stopped it we were in really good position to win the game. If I didn’t, I knew it would give them momentum.”

Also almost lost in Sunday’s slugfest were Teemu Selanne’s NHL-leading 38th and 39th goals. His first goal gave the Ducks their first lead, 3-2, at 15:58 of the second period. His second was the game-winner 2:51 into overtime, tying him for the league lead with seven.

With two goals and two assists, Selanne moved into a three-way tie for the NHL lead with 63 points. Jaromir Jagr of Pittsburgh and Peter Forsberg of Colorado also have 63 points.
