Titan Gymnast, Plagued by Injuries, Retires
Cal State Fullerton’s Katy Maty, the Big West Conference gymnast of the year last season, has decided to retire from the sport because of continued back problems, Coach Lynn Rogers said Monday.
Rogers said Maty, a junior from Chandler, Ariz., has three bulging discs in her lower back. Maty had not competed in the team’s four meets this season.
Maty won the Big West all-around championship last season, but missed competing in the NCAA regional after injuring her left knee on a dismount in the conference meet last March.
Maty competed in the 1995 World University Games.
