Darell Garretson, the chief of the NBA’s officials, will retire from that post at the end of the season and fill a new job as director of referee training, the league announced Friday.
Garretson has headed the officiating staff the past 17 years and worked as one of the league’s top officials for a quarter-century.
A new chief of officiating is expected to be named
Garretson began officiating in 1967-68 and worked more than 2,000 games during his career, including 269 playoff games, five All-Star games and 41 games in the NBA Finals.
He is widely considered a pioneer in the use of videotape to improve the techniques and mechanics of basketball officiating.
