STINGRAYS TONIGHT
Opponent--San Jose Lasers.
Time--7:30 p.m.
Records--San Jose 21-20, Long Beach 23-16.
Site--Pyramid, Long Beach State.
Update--Two days after easily her team’s most painful loss of the season, StingRay Coach Maura McHugh hopes her team can summon resources sufficient to stop San Jose’s three-game win streak and launch a grueling, season-ending eastern road trip Thursday. The Lasers, who demolished Colorado, 84-60, on Sunday appear to be at their season’s peak. So did Long Beach, until Sunday. The StingRays’ three-game win streak seemed about to become four. They had a 73-66 lead with 58 seconds left in regulation, when Portland rallied to tie it, then won going away in overtime. The cost: To win the ABL West, the StingRays would have to go 5-0 and Portland would have to lose one of its remaining three. Columbus, New England, Portland, Long Beach, San Jose and Colorado have clinched playoff berths.
