Oseguera Sparks UCI Past Titans

UC Irvine’s Leticia Oseguera tied a career high with 20 rebounds as the Anteaters defeated Cal State Fullerton, 74-67, in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday at UC Irvine.

Oseguera, who is 13th in the nation in rebounding, also scored 23 points, making 10 of 17 shots from the field. Megan Stafford had 18 points and a season-high 12 assists and Nikole Payton scored 16 points, including 12 on three-pointers, for UC Irvine (12-9, 7-3).

The Titans (8-12, 5-4) were led by Andrea Thieme with 18 points, Justine McMahan had 16 and Erin Whiteside and Kris Sigg had 14 each.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Azusa Pacific 53, Concordia 50--Kelly Speas made two free throws with 11 seconds left and Azusa Pacific held on to stop a three-game losing streak. Pilar Surch scored 13 points for Azusa Pacific (14-10, 3-5).

Heather Carll had 17 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots for visiting Concordia (18-7, 5-3). Priscilla Bendick had 11 points and two blocked shots for the Eagles.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Christian Heritage 64, Chapman 61--Courtney Kaneage scored 15 points and April Abeyta had 12 for Chapman (15-7), which trailed by one at the half. Lisa Nielsen grabbed 12 rebounds and Elizabeth Zonalli had seven assists for the Panthers.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Azusa Pacific 74, Concordia 71--T.J. Walker scored 21 points to lead host Azusa Pacific (23-4, 8-1). Jeremy DeVries added 19 points. Josh Giles led Concordia (12-14, 3-6) with 18 points and Joey Busch scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kalim Scott also added 14 points and nine rebounds.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 10, Redlands 8--Rob O’Brien had three hits and three RBIs as visiting Chapman used a five-run seventh inning to complete a comeback and spoil Redlands’ home opener. Teammate Mike Thornton also had three hits and three RBIs for the Panthers (2-0).

Jason Moeller had three hits and two RBIs for Chapman.

The Master’s 3, Southern California College 2--Chris Kollman had a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning, giving The Master’s a 3-1 lead. Eric Fuller pitched four, one-hit innings of relief for The Master’s (3-0).

Joseph Rivera and Kevin Moore each had two hits for SCC (2-1).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 5, Westmont 2--Jeff Baker defeated Westmont’s Sawn Whitney, 6-1, 6-0, in a victory for Southern California College (1-0).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Loyola Marymount 5, UC Irvine 4--Laura Gross and Lia Bunker won their singles matches and then combined at No. 2 doubles to defeat Carla Nasca and Kelly Foster for the Lions (1-1). UC Irvine falls to 1-1.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, San Diego State 1--Senior middle blocker Cory Weber had 33 kills to help the Anteaters defeat the host Aztecs, 15-13, 3-15, 15-11, 15-12. Donnie Rafter added 22 kills for UC Irvine (7-2, 4-2), and Kevin Dake had 76 assists. Senior outside hitter Matt Hyden also made 33 kills, and senior setter Dustin Cremascoli made a game-high 91 assists for the Aztecs (1-4, 1-4).
