MICHIGAN WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

* County connection: Joanna Fielder of Newport Harbor High.

* Worth noting: Fielder, a freshman middle blocker, was presented the Most Improved Player award at the team’s annual postseason banquet. Fielder finished with the team’s third-best block average and averaged better than two kills per game. The Wolverines were 21-12 overall.

NORTHWESTERN MEN’S BASKETBALL

* County connection: Sean Wink of Brea Olinda High.

* Worth noting: Wink, who was a Times Orange County first-team selection last season when he made 91 of 220 three-point attempts, has continued his long-range shooting as a freshman starter for the Wildcats. He is ranked 21st nationally and first in the Big Ten in three-point baskets per game (3.15) and 16th nationally and second in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (.485). Wink, a 6-2 guard, is averaging 12.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 33 minutes per game.

CAL POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO MEN’S BASKETBALL

* County connections: Brandon Beeson of Woodbridge and Josh Porter of Mater Dei and Irvine Valley College.

* Worth noting: Porter, a senior guard, made a layup with 2:49 left in overtime to put the Mustangs (11-12) ahead to stay Thursday during an 81-79 victory at Long Beach State. Porter, inserted into the starting lineup two weeks ago, scored nine against the 49ers. He had been averaging 2.7 points. Beeson, a 6-7 freshman who is starting at center, averages 3.9 points and 3.6 rebounds. He was a Times Orange County first-team selection last season, when he averaged 15 points and seven rebounds playing alongside Chris Burgess (Duke).
