College Financial Aid Workshop Planned

A free workshop on financial aid to attend college will be held Wednesday at Pierce College.

The workshop will assist students in filling out financial aid applications and answer questions on eligibility, said Jeremy Villar, financial aid manager at the Woodland Hills community college.

Villar said students are often unaware of the different types of aid available.

“From my experience, I’ve met a lot of students who had no idea of what types of financial aid are available out there, such as Pell Grant and state grants, an example being Cal Grant,” said Villar, who will be conducting the workshops. “That’s why we have these workshops so we can disseminate this information to them.”

Villar will also discuss how students can submit their financial aid applications through the Internet.

“We find that a lot of students have their own computers so more and more students are taking advantage of this,” he said. “I personally think it’s the way to go in the future, and the government likes it too because they save a lot of taxpayers’ dollars by not printing the paper applications.”

The workshop is open to the community as well as Pierce students, said Villar, who added that parents of college-bound high school students are also welcome.

The workshop will begin at 1 p.m. at the Financial Aid Conference Room in Bungalow 327 at the campus, 6201 Winnetka Ave.

Reservations are required as seating is limited.

Additional workshops will be held April 1 and May 6.
