Collins on Mend After Surgery

Barely three weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair frayed cartilage, Stanford freshman forward Jason Collins is recovering quickly.

Collins, who shared The Times’ Valley player of the year award last season with his twin, Jarron Collins, at Harvard-Westlake High, injured the knee in practice the first week of December. The surgery was performed Dec. 10.

“He was up and around the next day and is currently rehabilitating [the knee] by riding a stationary bike,” said Bob Vasquez, sports information director at Stanford. “All signs look like he’s on his way to a rapid recovery.”

Vasquez said it is too early to make a decision to redshirt Collins, saying there is a possibility the 6-foot-10 post player could play again this season.

Andrew Carlson, a senior post player at Moorpark, has torn knee tendons and will be out for at least a month and a half, Musketeer Coach Tim Bednar said.

Carlson, 6-5 and 190 pounds, missed much of last season because of a knee injury. Bednar said Carlson will not undergo surgery for the injury suffered Dec. 23 against North Hollywood, and might return for the playoffs.

FOOTBALL

Just days after saying he would attend Arizona State, Montclair Prep linebacker Kevin Bentley has changed his mind and says he has chosen California.

Bentley had 10 sacks for the Mounties last season.

Justin Fargas of Notre Dame High said he plans to visit Michigan on Jan. 9-11, Northwestern on Jan. 16-18 and USC on Jan. 23-25.

Fargas, who rushed for 2,816 yards and 35 touchdowns last season, has visited UCLA.
