Boys of Winter: If it’s January, it’s time for pro baseball players to start working out in the Valley. The region’s snowbirds include a flock from the talent-rich high school class of ’93. Two have already reached the majors: former Crespi pitcher Jeff Suppan (Arizona Diamondbacks) and former Montclair Prep first baseman Brad Fullmer (Montreal Expos).

Class Leaders: Former El Camino Real High shortstop Dan Cey, above, a member of the Minnesota Twins organization, calls wintering in the Valley great. “It seems like everybody is playing baseball,” said Cey, who batted .284 for Class-A Fort Myers, Fla. Cey, getting in shape after shoulder surgery, will be hanging out at El Camino Real with former teammate Randy Wolf, a pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

Beantown Baby: Suppan, 22, a West Hills resident, was taken as the No. 3 pick overall by the Diamondbacks in the expansion draft in November. He had a 7-3 record with a 5.49 earned-run average in his first full season with the Boston Red Sox. He could pitch for the first time as a pro in Los Angeles when the Diamondbacks play at Dodger Stadium April 7-9.

True Blue: Former Kennedy High pitcher Jon Garland, a first-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs, recently bought a home in Northridge. He still visits the Granada Hills campus to offer support to his former teammates.
