Strong Field Ready for Holiday Challenge

Many of the top boys’ basketball teams and players in Southern California are scheduled to play in the one-day Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Challenge Jan. 19 at Pauley Pavilion.

The event, hosted by Compton Dominguez High, features eight games, including a showdown between Dominguez, the two-time defending Division II state champion, and Westchester, a City Section 4-A finalist last season.

Dominguez defeated Crenshaw, 101-90, in last season’s featured game.

This year’s schedule:

9:30 a.m.: Redondo Union vs. South Torrance.

11:00 a.m.: Santa Ana Mater Dei vs. Anaheim Canyon.

12:30 p.m.: Lakewood Artesia vs. Long Beach Jordan.

2 p.m.: Compton vs. San Diego University.

3:30 p.m.: Long Beach Poly vs. Fairfax.

5 p.m: Crenshaw vs. Etiwanda.

6:30 p.m.: Compton Dominguez vs. Westchester.

8 p.m.: Glendora vs. Burbank Bellarmine-Jefferson.

Fox Sports West 2 will show its first high school basketball “Game of the Week” today at 5 p.m. with a delayed telecast of a boys’ Mission League opener between Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Chaminade.

Sultan McCullogh of Pasadena Muir, who ran the fastest 200 meters in the nation last year (20.65 seconds), and Justin Fargas of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, the defending state champion in the 100 meters, are among those entered in the Football 50, a 50-meter dash to be held during the Los Angeles Invitational track meet Feb. 7 at the Sports Arena.

Other participants are DeShaun Foster of Tustin, winner of the Times’ Glenn Davis Award as the outstanding high school football player last season; Darrell Rideaux and Kareem Kelly of Long Beach Poly and Josh Levi of Chino.

Fargas, a running back and defensive back, was selected Valley football player of the year and Chad Pierson of Oxnard, a fullback and linebacker, was named Ventura County player of the year by The Times’ San Fernando Valley/Ventura editions.
