Fire-Prevention Program Targets Kids

More than 100 Anaheim teachers soon will have a new lesson for elementary school students: “Learn Not to Burn.”

The Magnolia School District instructors received training Thursday for a new Fire Department program aimed at teaching children the dangers of playing with matches and lighters.

Children’s fire play caused about $1 million in damage in Anaheim from 1993 to 1995, fire officials said. And many kids are unaware of what they should do to save themselves in case of fire.

The Anaheim Fire Department received a grant in January 1996 from the National Fire Protection Assn. to create the “Learn Not to Burn” program.

Teachers will begin using the four-month program later this month. Fire officials eventually hope to expand the program to elementary schools throughout Anaheim and the county.
