Library Tax, 4 Measures to Be Placed on April Ballot
The City Council has unanimously approved placing a library tax and four other measures on a special election ballot April 14.
After months of discussion on how to improve the much-used city library, the council agreed Wednesday night to seek voter approval on the measure, which would generate $500,000 annually in extra revenue for the facility.
The measure needs two-thirds voter approval to pass.
City Librarian Linda Wilson said the money generated would allow construction of a second floor. It also would pay for a new roof, allow the facility to open on Sundays, increase the book budget and provide additional funding for children’s programs.
If approved, the measure would cost homeowners $25 annually. Businesses and owners of apartment complexes with more than three units would pay $75 a year.
The four other measures would designate more open space around certain city parks, rezone an industrial area for offices, increase the size of commercial lots on North Garfield Avenue and allow rezoning of a portion of a landfill for retail use. The measures need a simple majority to pass.
