More Rain Could Wash Out College Tennis Tournament
Top-seeded Bob Bryan of Stanford struggled to defeat Michael Jessup of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, on Saturday in the rain-delayed second round of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.
The weekend tournament offers an early season glimpse at eight of the top men’s and women’s college teams in the nation.
Heavy rain postponed matches on Friday, but the weather stayed dry enough Saturday to allow for first- and second-round play.
In other men’s matches, third-seeded Mike Bryan of Stanford defeated Alex DeCret of UCLA, 6-4, 6-4. Kyle Spencer of USC beat Keith Mauriello of Kentucky, 6-1, 6-1, in a first-round match.
In women’s play, top-seeded Teryn Ashley of Stanford defeated Katy Propstra of Arizona State, 6-4, 6-2. Fifth-seeded Amanda Augustus of Cal defeated Vanessa Abel of Arizona, 6-4, 6-2. Ania Bleszynski of Stanford upset seventh-seeded Kim Gates of Texas, 6-4, 6-0.
Rain delays have left officials doubtful the tournament will be completed by tonight. “We’ve got kids who have to go home,” an official said. “They have to go back to school.”
