Up, Down, Up

Ours is a world in perpetual motion. Firefighters escort residents displaced by a fire at a South-Central Los Angeles retirement home. Dino Hatzopoulos, 12, sleds along on the seat of his pants at Lake Arrowhead. And a bicyclist takes a shortcut up an escalator between hilly downtown Los Angeles streets.

Each Day’s a Miracle

Brieana Bethune Jones, 13, participates in a worship service near her home in Moreno Valley. Because of a series of mishaps at her birth, Brieana is a spastic quadriplegic, unable to use her limbs or her voice. Her mom has lingered in a coma since the delivery, which robbed mother and child of oxygen for a critical five to 10 minutes. Even so, Brieana is an above-average student who is actively involved outside her home.
