Community Blood Drive Will Salute Quake Help
In observance of the aid that hard-hit Santa Monica received from civic agencies and individuals after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, a community group will hold its fourth annual blood drive Wednesday.
Richard Bloom, president of Friends of Sunset Park, said his neighborhood organization hoped to collect 75 pints of blood, double the amount that was donated during the 1997 drive.
He said the goal was spurred by reports from the American Red Cross that blood supplies have been low because many regular donors have been stricken by the flu.
The blood drive will be held from 3:15 to 8:30 p.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 1343 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica. Donors who want make an appointment can call (310) 392-3366.
At 6 p.m. a ceremony will recall the suffering caused by the earthquake and the efforts of officials and public citizens to help others in its aftermath.
“Giving blood is a way of repaying the acts of charity of others,” Bloom said.
