Quance Places Fifth at World Swim Meet

Former Granada Hills High standout Kristine Quance finished fifth in the 400 meter individual medley Monday at the World Swimming Championships in Perth, Australia. Quance timed 4:42.01, more than five seconds behind winner Chen Yan of China.

Quance will compete in three other individual events later this week.

Forfeits: The Rio Mesa boys’ soccer team began the week at 7-4-1 and 0-3 in league play after forfeiting a league victory for using a player who violated the Southern Section ban on outside competition during the season.

The incident came to light when Oxnard High officials, having discovered illegal outside participation by a Yellowjacket player, called Rio Mesa administrators to inform them that a Spartan player had participated in the same event.

Rio Mesa Coach Brent Kruk declined to name the player, who is a senior starter with 16 goals.

Oxnard assistant Glen Grago, the Yellowjackets’ former head coach, identified the Oxnard player as reserve Isidro Aguilar.

Grago said Aguilar was held out of last week’s losses to Buena and Dos Pueblos while school officials investigated his case. Those games will count as a suspension for Aguilar, Grago said. The Rio Mesa player will miss two games this week for lying to an administrator about his action, Kruk said.

Rio Mesa plays today at Oxnard (3-2-5, 0-3).

“It should be an interesting game,” Grago said. “[Rio Mesa is] going to be really upset with us, I’m sure.”
