Harp Music

Internationally known harpist Deborah Henson-Conant performs at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Sylvia Woods Harp Center, 915 N. Glendale Ave., Glendale. Henson-Conant plays the harp and sings. Her musical influences include jazz, folk, funk, pop, blues, flamenco, calypso and classical. She has performed all over the world. She’s toured with the Boston Pops and also jammed with the “Tonight” show’s former musical director Doc Severinsen. She’s been described as “a wild woman” (Severinsen) and “a wonderfully bizarre performance artist.” (Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops). In 1991, The Times’ jazz critic, the late Leonard Feather, called her an exception to the rule that harpers can’t play jazz. Blues

Bay Area blues singer Sista Monica Parker performs in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Palmdale Playhouse, 38334 10th St. E. The Chicago-born Parker moved to California in the late 1980s. Although she sang gospel music since her childhood, for a while she quit singing altogether and worked in the Silicon Valley as an executive headhunter. Then in 1992, inspired by the success of a former neighbor, M.C. Hammer, Parker was reborn. Since then, she’s performed at festivals across the United States. Sista Monica, whose debut album, “Get Out My Way” was released in 1995, is working on a follow-up, tentatively titled “Stop Talkin’ ‘Bout Me Stalkin’ you.” $8-$12. (805) 267-5685.

Jazz

L.A. jazzman Buddy Collette played sax with the greats--Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum. A member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet in the mid-1950s, the multi-reed artist has long been acclaimed as a teacher as well as a performer. Like other gifted Angelenos, he has also been a studio musician, including a stint on Groucho Marx’s classic TV show, “You Bet Your Life.” Collette and his quintet appear Saturday at 8 p.m. in a concert called “A Man of Many Parts,” in the Malkin-Becker Performing Arts Series at the Valley Cities Jewish Community Center, 13164 Burbank Blvd., Sherman Oaks. $12. Collectibles

The Citrus Label Society will hold a show and sale of fruit-crate labels Saturday at the Sunkist Headquarters, 14130 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks. Exhibited will be the wares of more than 10 vendors from all over California. Prices range from $1-$2 for the more common labels to $500-$1,500 for the rare ones dating back to the turn of the century.
