Kids’ Shop Offers Top-Quality Duds at Parent-Friendly Prices

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The closing of the Stork Shop last month was a sad day for many mothers and grandmothers. It was one of the few places in Southern California where one could find new quality apparel at reasonable prices for the small fry in our lives.

But along comes A-Plus Kids Store with some extraordinary deals on good stuff for children. Gary and Irena Zaks opened just a little over a year ago when they had been buying clothing for their children Michelle, 7, and Gregory, 5, and were horrified at the prices. So they decided there was a need for quality children’s apparel at discounted prices.

The inventory here is made up of manufacturers’ overstocks, close-outs and liquidations, but it is all first quality. To the left as you enter are displays of the upscale merchandise (also displayed on the walls throughout), and I was greeted by a charming Sylvia Whyte two-piece dress.

But I thought they had made an error on the tag, which said, “Our price $79.99” next to another sticker stating the price as $39.99. No mistake, says Gary Zaks. “It was selling at a major discounter for $79.99. The original price was around $120,” he said.

Some of the most sought-after labels are on the racks--and, as usual, there is more stuff for girls than for boys. A Bambolini party dress that sold at boutiques for $70 and up is $20, and a velvet Nicole by Dorissa is $22.40 instead of $80.

If you’ve shopped the major boutiques, you know the Awesome label, which you’ll find on the racks, along with the popular Creme de la Creme (a one-piece for a toddler was $11.99), Pourquoi (Mes Enfants) and Jumpadoo. There are also some excellent buys on pajamas, sleepers and tights.

Before you make your selection, check out the sale items for $3, $5 and $8.
