Woman Disfigured by Acid Has New Surgery
Carol Guscott, the Jamaican woman whose face was disfigured when thugs poured battery acid on her, is undergoing the second in a series of reconstructive surgeries that she hopes will restore her appearance.
The woman, who is living in a Fullerton apartment rented for her by local service clubs, is being treated by two Santa Monica plastic surgeons. Drs. Brian M. Kinney and Garry Brody and Century City Hospital were so moved by Guscott’s story that they are donating their services.
Guscott, 37, was closing her hardware shop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, in 1994 when two men robbed her at gunpoint, bound her hands and feet and poured battery acid on her face and chest. Her face became so disfigured that she said she couldn’t bear to look in the mirror.
During her first reconstructive surgery three months ago, Kinney and Brody removed the top layer of her facial skin and grafted on healthy skin from her stomach and back. On Monday, the doctors began resurfacing Guscott’s nose and upper lip.
