For Starters, They Need Another One

The Dodgers are in the market for a fifth starter.

Dennis Reyes had occupied that role, but he was dealt Saturday along with Paul Konerko to the Cincinnati Reds for all-star closer Jeff Shaw.

Pete Harnisch of the Reds is on most general managers’ wish lists, but the Dodgers probably don’t have enough prospects remaining to engineer that deal. Unless, of course, interim General Manager Tom Lasorda is willing to trade coveted third baseman Adrian Beltre--which he says he isn’t.

To fill the Dodgers’ need, Lasorda might promote 22-year-old left-hander Ted Lilly, who was recently promoted from double-A San Antonio to triple-A Albuquerque. Another outside possibility is right-hander Mike Judd, 23, whom the Dodgers protected in the expansion draft.

The Dodgers optioned right-hander Manuel Barrios to Albuquerque and recalled infielder Alex Cora from Albuquerque. Cora started at shortstop and got his first major league hit, a bunt single.
