Familiar Names Climbing Nike Tour Leaderboards

Last week was pretty good for Nike Tour golfers with ties to the region.

Bob Burns, a Kennedy High graduate, finished second in the Nike Hershey Open at the Country Club of Hershey in Hershey, Pa., with a four-round total of 275, two strokes behind Michael Clark.

Chris Zambri and Charlie Wi, former teammates at Westlake High, also finished in the top 10. Zambri, a week after finishing second, took fourth at 278, and Wi, playing in only his fourth Nike event of the year, finished sixth at 280.

Burns is fifth on the season money list with $93,677. Zambri is seventh with $83,259. The top 15 finishers earn exemptions for the PGA Tour in 1999.

Second best: Brandon Christianson of Valencia shot a final-round four-under-par 53 and finished second in the boys’ 11-12 year-old division at the Junior World Championships at Singing Hills Resort in El Cajon.

Christianson, who had a three-round total of 13-under-par 158, finished two strokes behind Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights. Kyle Thurston of Moorpark, the first-round leader, finished sixth at 168.

Julie Park of Granada Hills and Krystal Shearer of Northridge made the cut in the girls’ 15-17 year-old division at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla.

Park is 24th after shooting 79-77-79--235 and Shearer is 28th at 77-77-82--236.

There is a three-way tie for the lead at 221 heading into the final round today.

In the boys’ 15-17 division, Justin Ohye of Calabasas is tied for 23rd with a total of 74-72-74--220, and Brian Woolf of Granada Hills is tied for 30th at 72-77-72--221.

Taro Hiroi of Japan leads the division at 70-68-75--213.

Lee-way: Anne Lee of Northridge shot three-over-par 75 in the third round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Tournament of Champions on Thursday at Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club and is in a tie for 15th place with a three-round total of 230.

Lee, who will be a junior at Notre Dame High in the fall, trails leader Paula Marti of Spain by 19 strokes heading into the final round today.
