Defender Jan Eriksson headed in a corner kick by Paul Dougherty in the 50th minute Saturday night to give the Tampa Bay Mutiny a 2-1 Major League Soccer victory over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars at East Rutherford, N.J., before 14,322.

The goal was Eriksson’s first of the season and gave the Mutiny (5-14) its second road victory against the MetroStars.

Mutiny goalkeeper Doug Petras, a veteran of four years of indoor soccer, was playing only his third MLS game. Petras was playing in place of regular goalie Thomas Ravelli, who was sitting out the second game of a six-game suspension for kicking the ball at the referee during Tampa Bay’s 3-2 loss to New England on July 4.
