* James A. ‘Al’ Berch; Longtime Chicken Rancher

Longtime Ventura County resident and farmer James A. “Al” Berch died Tuesday at a Santa Paula convalescent hospital after a brief illness. He was 92.

Berch was born March 25, 1906, in Vancouver, Wash., and was a 48-year Ventura County resident. Berch lived in Ventura before moving into the rest home.

Berch was a chicken rancher who retired in 1976 after working for many years at Goldman’s Egg City in Moorpark.

He enjoyed spending time with his good friend Ray Meadows, Berch’s family said.

He was a life member of Lions International, serving in clubs in Moorpark, Santa Paula and both east and downtown Ventura. He was the winner of a Lions Club service award.

Berch is survived by his son, James Alfred Berch Jr. of Orange; two daughters, Judy Core of Ventura and Gail Jordon of Covina; seven grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.

There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Friday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.

The Rev. Austin Coe will officiate. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Lions Canine Companion for Independence Program in Ventura.
