Brush Fire East of San Diego Forces Evacuations, Destroys 2 Mobile Homes
A brush fire burned at least 500 acres, consumed two mobile homes and forced evacuations in a rural area near Barrett Junction on Friday, authorities said.
The blaze, which broke out about 1:20 p.m. about 35 miles east of San Diego, was 40% contained Friday evening. Full containment was expected by 6 p.m. today.
One firefighter suffered a wrist injury, said Sheri Bolick, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry.
California 94 north of Barrett Junction was closed as 340 firefighters fought the blaze, the cause of which was under investigation. Temperatures in the area were in the 90s.
In Kern County, a brush fire burned 50 acres and forced the evacuation of 50 children at Camp Condor near Frazier Park. No injuries were reported and the blaze, which started at 2:45 p.m., was expected to be contained this morning.
