AROUND THE LEAGUES

Ty Van Burkleo (Chatsworth High), a career minor leaguer who also spent a few years playing professionally in Japan, might have found his calling as a batting instructor.

Van Burkleo is the hitting coach for the High Desert Mavericks, the Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the California League.

Van Burkleo was credited by High Desert Manager Don Wakamatsu for helping infielder Jarrod Patterson, the league’s player of the week from July 6-12.

Patterson batted .433 with 13 hits, 11 runs batted in and seven runs in seven games. He hit three home runs, two triples and two doubles for a .933 slugging percentage. Since June 3, Patterson is batting .402.

“Ty made some adjustments with [Patterson] that he obviously seems to like,” Wakamatsu said.
