An Oxnard man who apparently shot himself in the leg was in fair condition Thursday at Ventura County Medical Center.

Amado Ramos, 29, was found unconscious by a passerby about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of West Gonzales Road, Oxnard police said.

Although Ramos at first said that he was the victim of a drive-by shooting, doctors believed he shot himself, police said. Oxnard police questioned Ramos, who initially identified himself as Adrian Chacon, and he admitted that he accidentally shot himself, authorities said.

Because Ramos is on parole, he should not have been in possession of a gun, police said. Police cited him on suspicion of providing a false name, filing a false police report and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and transferred to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition late Thursday.

Police had not been able to locate the gun.
