A security guard and an armed man fatally shot each other in a Pomona bar just after midnight Friday, police said.

The shootout at El Tapatio at 1332 S. Garey Ave. broke out after police arrived in the parking lot to investigate a report of a man with a gun, authorities said.

Police were interviewing two people when a security guard went into the bar to find someone and officers heard gunfire.

Moments later, a wounded man ran from the rear of the bar and climbed over a wall. Police captured the man and other officers found the security guard lying in the restroom area of the bar, said Lt. Rick Mackey.

Both the suspect and the security guard, neither of whom police would identify, were taken to Pomona Valley Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

It is unclear whether the security guard and the suspect spoke before shooting each other, but Mackey said shots were heard seconds after the guard walked into the bar.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call (909) 620-2177 or (909) 620-2169.
