Stanford’s Bob Bryan completed a rare sweep of NCAA men’s tennis titles Sunday, adding the individual singles and doubles championships to the team title the Cardinal won Tuesday.

Bryan, seeded sixth, swept past the Cardinal’s Paul Goldstein, seeded fourth, 6-3, 6-2, in the singles final, and then rested for 90 minutes before returning to the court with his brother, Mike Bryan, to defeat Pepperdine’s Kelly Gullett and Robert Lindstedt, 6-7 (8-6), 6-2, 6-4, in the doubles final.

Bryan is only the second player to win all three titles in the same year since the current format was instituted in 1977. Stanford’s Alex O’Brien pulled off the same feat in 1992. His two individual championships were the most recent for the Cardinal until Bryan’s sweep on a sweltering day at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

“I really didn’t come here thinking about the individual tournament,” said Bob Bryan, who helped Stanford win its fourth team title in a row. “I was so focused on the team. But once we got past that, I had the momentum to carry me all the way through the week.”

A 20-year-old sophomore from Camarillo, Calif., Bryan played 19 matches in eight days, including three on the final day.
