ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Amanda Freed

Pacifica, Senior; Softball/Pitcher

Freed has been the dominant pitcher in the county for so long that sometimes her excellence is overlooked. Last week in the playoffs, when the competition is supposed to get tougher, she shined again, leading the Mariners into the Division III semifinals by pitching two no-hitters. She struck out 14 in a 2-0 victory over El Modena in the quarterfinals.

Darnesha Griffth/Track and Field

* Trabuco Hills, senior. Had the top qualifying mark in the long jump (19 feet 4 3/4 inches) and high jump (5-9) at the Masters Meet.

Kelsey Kollen/Softball/Second base

* Mater Dei, senior. Had three hits and scored the winning run in Mater Dei’s 2-1 quarterinal victory over Fountain Valley.

Allyson Marquand/Track and Field

* University, junior. Finished second in the 3,200 (10 minutes 48.63 seconds) at the Masters Meet to qualify for this weekend’s state finals.
