Senior Beth Burton of Cal State Northridge finished ninth among 21 competitors in the shot put at the NCAA Track and Field championships on Thursday at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y.

Burton’s toss of 53 feet 2 1/4 inches lead a group of three Northridge women in the event.

Sophomore Christina Tolson finished 11th at 52-9 1/2 and Cheree Hicks, another sophomore, was 12th at 52-4.

Tressa Thompson of Nebraska won the event with a meet-record 61-2 1/4.

All three Matadors failed to match the marks they set in finishing 1-2-3 at the Big Sky Conference championships last month, when Burton set a school record of 54-8 3/4.
