The veteran Mexican sextet Los Tigres del Norte has been the undisputed master of norten~o music for years, building a massive following in its home country. The group plays a rare small-hall show as part of UCLA’s summer-long “Corridos Sin Fronteras” festival.

All day Jazz

The cool school of jazz that sprang up in California in the ‘50s will be celebrated in the American Jazz Institute’s four-day “California Cool Jazz Festival” at the Redondo Beach Crowne Plaza Hotel. Panel discussion and concert appearances from West Coast jazz legends Terry Gibbs, Lennie Niehaus, Herb Geller, Bill Perkins and the Woody Herman Band are scheduled.

“Everything I do is a dance,” said Charlie Chaplin to explain his comic style. Now along comes choreographer Roland Petit and the Ballet National de Marseille to evoke in classical dance some of the most memorable film roles and situations created by the late actor-director-composer. In “Chaplin Dances,” (a.k.a. Charlot Danse Avec Nous), famed Russian ballerina Altynai Asylmuratova and Italian character dancer Luigi Bonino lead the ensemble in a full-evening tribute to the Little Tramp, dancing to music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Fiorenzo Carpi and Chaplin himself.
