2 pm: Silent Film

“Lilac Time” (1928) with Colleen Moore and Gary Cooper and “An Arcadian Maid” (1910) with Mary Pickford and Mack Sennett will be featured in the 11th annual Silent Film Benefit for the Catalina Island Museum. The films will be screened in the Avalon Theatre in the historic Casino Building. Robert Salisbury will accompany the films on the original Page Theatre organ.

11 am: Photography

Berenice Abbott, onetime darkroom assistant to Man Ray in Paris, documents the growth of New York City in the 1930s in a show of her photographs opening at Peter Fetterman Gallery. The images of skyscrapers, stores, newsstands and the waterfront are part of a photographic study that was funded by the WPA and the Museum of the City of New York.

Hundreds of artists will hit the pavement at Pasadena’s Centennial Square this weekend for the 6th annual “Absolut Chalk” street painting festival, where 10-foot-square murals will be created exclusively from chalk. A chalk area for kids, munchies from area restaurants and live music round out the festivities.

A dramatic reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and a discussion of the history of African Americans in the West will highlight “Celebrate Juneteenth,” a day-long event at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. Also featured will be a “Bop! Bam! Boom!,” high school gospel choir and a children’s rhythm class.

Mariah Carey and Gloria Estefan headline an all-star lineup that includes Hootie & the Blowfish, Tom Jones, Olivia Newton-John, Paula Cole and Meredith Brooks at KIIS-FM’s first Wango Tango pop extravaganza. Proceeds from the show, which will be hosted by Rick Dees and Will Smith, benefit the Los Angeles Breast Cancer Alliance.

Noon: Theater

The sixth annual NoHo Theatre & Arts Festival serves up more than 100 free performances of comedies, musicals, classics and children’s shows, presented by more than 50 companies. Also available will be an arts and crafts fair, food, a “Kids’ Kourt” area and street performers.
