An El Monte man was airlifted to a hospital from the scene of a four-vehicle accident on the Artesia Freeway on Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Jorge Fernandez, 69, was traveling east in a Chevy van at 12:50 p.m. when he rear-ended a flatbed truck west of Beach Boulevard, Officer Denise Medina said. The truck collided with a big rig, which then struck a tour bus.

Authorities airlifted Fernandez to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was treated for serious cuts and fractures. He was in fair condition Monday night, authorities said. Another driver was treated at the scene.
