Smoltz Plans to Return Saturday

Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz, bothered all season by a sore elbow and on the disabled list twice after undergoing surgery in December, plants to start Saturday at Montreal.

His most recent trip to the DL came after he had to leave a May 23 start against the Chicago Cubs.

In the past week, Smoltz made a couple of rehabilitation starts in the minor leagues, giving up six earned runs in 10 innings.

Left-hander Damian Moss, 21, one of the Braves’ top pitching prospects who has been on the disabled list all season after feeling a pop in his pitching elbow during a spring training game on March 7, will have major surgery to replace the injured ligament next Wednesday and will sit out the rest of the season.

The Cincinnati Reds acquired pitcher Rick Krivda from the Cleveland Indians for two minor leaguers, pitcher Eddie Priest and outfielder Christian Rojas.
