Long Beach State third baseman Paul Day, the Big West Conference player of the year, signed with the Cleveland Indians, his agent, Randell Monaco, said Wednesday.

Day, a junior, left Wednesday for Burlington, N.C., home of the organization’s short-season rookie league team.

Day attended Capistrano Valley High and Saddleback College. He batted .438 with 13 home runs and 77 runs batted in for the 49ers during the regular season. He had a 22-game hitting streak and hit safely in 49 of 54 games for Long Beach (33-20-1), which won the Big West tournament and advanced to the College World Series.

He was on the All-Big West first team, a 1998 Baseball Weekly first-team All-American, and a 1998 Baseball America second-team All-American. He has never missed a high school or college game because of injury, Monaco said.

The Burlington Indians of the Appalachian League play a 68-game season, from June 17 to Aug. 26. Monaco said Day will start as soon as he passes a physical.
