Foster Heads List of Shrine Participants

Cerritos College will be the site of the Shrine All-Star Football Classic on July 25.

The California vs. Texas all-star game has been played the last three years at Cal State Fullerton. California leads the series, 3-0.

County players committed to participate are Tustin running back DeShaun Foster (UCLA), The Times Orange County back of the year, and San Clemente offensive lineman Robert Richardson (Villanova), The Times Orange County lineman of the year.

Santa Margarita quarterback Carson Palmer (USC) will be joined by Eagle teammate John Minardi (Colorado), a wide receiver and defensive back. Capistrano Valley’s Blake Worley will be on the offensive line and Mater Dei’s Joey Boese (Wisconsin) in the defensive backfield.

The doubles team of Stanley Quade of La Habra and his son, Eric, of Tustin, won Friday to advance to today’s quarterfinals of the USTA National Senior Father/Son hardcourt tennis tournament at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

The Quades, who upset the fifth-seeded team of Don Hendrickson and his son, Drew, of Minnesota, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, will meet the third-seed team of J. Spencer Letts and his son, John, both from Rolling Hills, at 9:30 today.

Also advancing to today’s quarterfinals are Don Vieira of Bellevue, Wash., and his son, Kim, of Newport Beach, who will play the top-seeded team of Donald Biedinger and his son, Brian, from New Jersey, at 11 a.m. Irvine’s Jim Nelson and his son, Brian, also advanced.

The semifinals begin today at 12:30 with finals at noon Sunday.

Allison Wilbourn, the Central Valley Conference champion in the 100 and 400 hurdles, has committed to run for Cal State Fullerton, Titan assistant coach Chris Asher said. Wilbourn, who attended College of the Sequoias, finished third in the 100 hurdles in the state junior college meet.

Ryan Downey of St. Margaret’s High will run cross-country and track for William & Mary, said his mother, Laurie.

Downey won the Division V title in 1996. He qualified to defend his title this past season, but a stress fracture kept him from competing.

Marina’s Heather Cuthbertson, who holds the school record in the 880 meters, has signed to run track and field and cross-country at LSU, her father, Ed, said.

Canyon’s Heather Reynolds has committed to play soccer at Chapman, Comanche Coach Alex Camargo said. Reynolds, a defender and team captain, was an All-Century League first-team selection and All-Southern Section second-team pick.

Orange Coast College pitcher Mike Shwam has signed to play baseball with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Pirate Coach John Altobelli said.

Shwam, a right-hander from Edison High, was 3-4 with two saves last season.

The fourth Century Tip-Off boys’ basketball tournament continues through Sunday at Century High. Competition begins at 9 a.m. today, and the championship game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

County teams participating are Bolsa Grande, Canyon, Century, Corona del Mar, El Toro, Foothill, Loara, La Habra, Marina, Mission Viejo, Orange Lutheran and Saddleback.

The Mater Dei boys’ basketball tournament, which also continues through Sunday, features Dana Hills, Mater Dei, Newport Harbor, Los Alamitos, Santiago, Sonora, Trabuco Hills from Orange County.

Also playing are Lakewood Artesia, Glendora and Long Beach Poly.
