180 Acres Burn Near Joshua Tree Park
A fast-moving wildfire fanned by steady winds charred 180 acres of rugged terrain near Joshua Tree National Park on Tuesday as fire crews moved into neighborhoods to protect homes, authorities said.
The fire in an area adjoining the northwest corner of the park was heading northeast toward the town of Joshua Tree, said Battalion Chief Jack Consol of the California Department of Forestry.
There were no immediate evacuations, and no injuries were reported.
The fire started about 4 p.m. and was fanned by winds up to 20 mph. It moved into the federal Bureau of Land Management’s California Desert District, where rugged terrain hampered firefighting efforts. The cause was under investigation.
