Michael Keaton, Stephanie Powers, Tippi Hedren and Ron Masek were among the celebrities who attended the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Assn.’s annual Beastly Ball on June 13, honoring Steven Soboroff, senior advisor to the mayor and president of the Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission, for his continuing support of the zoo’s rebuilding efforts. Held at the zoo, the safari-themed ball netted nearly $400,000. Silent and live auction items included a walk-on part on “Frasier” and a Malaysian vacation package. Guests previewed “Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains,” a new one-acre habitat for 13 chimpanzees. GLAZA trustee Mary Grigsby Urquhart chaired the ball, which was attended by 825 guests.

The Para Los Nin~os board of directors raised more than $100,000 at its “Hearts on Track for Kids” fund-raiser at the Turf Club at Hollywood Park on June 5. KTLA Charities co-hosted the event, which will benefit impoverished children. Nearly 150 guests, including actors William Macy and Felicity Huffman, enjoyed nighttime horse racing and a live auction. KNBC reporter Michele Ruiz chaired and emceed the event. Former football star Danny Villanueva, chairman of Bastion Capital Corp. and Villanueva Cos., was presented with a lifetime achievement award for his commitment to the community.

The Pasadena Pops Orchestra raised $10,000 at its “Once Upon a Time . . . at the Castle Green” benefit June 5. The event commemorated the 100th anniversary of Pasadena’s historic Castle Green. Many of the more than 100 guests wore turn-of-the-century garb.

Editorial cartoonist Paul Conrad was given this year’s Women Against Gun Violence’s award for courageous leadership in combating gun violence at a June 7 brunch. The benefit was held at the Hancock Park home of Canadian Consul General Kim Campbell. The event netted $28,000.
