A Bang-Up Fourth for Mt. Rushmore
Fourth of July fireworks will burst above the famous faces of South Dakota’s Mt. Rushmore National Monument for the first time since 1939, beginning at midnight Friday. The fireworks celebrate a decade-long, $56-million project to improve tourist facilities, including a new visitor center that opened earlier this month and a new hiking trail, due to open Wednesday, that takes visitors closer than ever to the base of the massive carvings of four U.S. presidents.
The $7.7-million Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center and Museum includes two theaters, interactive displays and hundreds of photographs and artifacts--many on public view for the first time--that depict the monument’s creation and history. Information: tel. (605) 574-2523.
