The body of a man was found inside a backyard shed Sunday morning by police who were called to a Santa Ana home by neighbors who became concerned after hearing gunshots, police said.
Police described the discovery of the man’s body as a “possible homicide” that is being investigated by the department’s gang unit.
The victim, in his early 20s, has not yet been identified.
Residents in the 2200 block of Halladay Street told police they heard gunfire in the area about 5 a.m. then saw “suspicious activity” at the home about four hours later, Sgt. George Kopitch said.
“Officers checking the rear of the yard found a dead body inside a small shed-like structure,” Kopitch said. “Investigation later found the victim had been shot one time in the upper torso.”
Several people were inside the home when police arrived, but it is not known if any are suspects.
“All occupants of the residence were taken to the station for questioning,” Kopitch said. “Their involvement is unknown at this time. Several of these [people] have gang associations.”
