Share

Three motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving at a sobriety checkpoint on westbound Channel Islands Boulevard east of Ventura Road that concluded early Sunday, police said.

The checkpoint was the third this year conducted by the Oxnard Police Department and the 27th since January 1997, when Oxnard received a $380,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Officers from the Oxnard and the Port Hueneme police departments screened 1,123 vehicles between 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday, netting three DUI arrests and one arrest on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine. Thirty-nine drivers were cited for license violations or other vehicle code infractions, police said.

In all, 16 cars were towed from the checkpoint after their drivers were either arrested for driving under the influence or for driving without a valid license.

Police say DUI accidents in Oxnard and Port Hueneme have been reduced by as much as 25% since 1995, thanks in part to sobriety checkpoints.
