Long Beach Edges Stanford at Softball Tournament

Long Beach State beat Stanford, 4-3, Sunday, and clinched the best record in the Cal State Fullerton Showcase softball tournament.

The 49ers (11-4) scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead over Stanford (8-3). Long Beach State was 5-1 in the tournament and Stanford finished 4-2. Long Beach State also beat San Diego State, 3-2, Sunday.

Stanford beat Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, Sunday. The Titans earlier had beaten Virginia, 2-0, and were 3-3 in the tournament.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

UC Irvine 72, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 63--Sabrina Roberson scored 15 points and Leticia Oseguera added 12 points and 16 rebounds in the final regular-season game for host UC Irvine (16-10, 11-4), which was second in the conference.

Princess Hatcher made 10 of 14 free throws and had 14 points for the Anteaters, who open against Idaho in the conference tournament Wednesday at Reno.

Shannon Anders added 13 points for UC Irvine, which was 10-2 at home this season. San Luis Obispo finished 6-20, 3-12.

At the Pacific 10 wrestling championships:

Cal State Fullerton finishes seventh--Sean Kim (118 pounds) was the top finisher for the Titans as he came in second. Kim lost to Mike Kawamura of Arizona State, 8-4, in the final.

Arizona State won the the tournament with 134.5 points. Oregon State (113.5) was second, Oregon (100.5) third, Bakersfield (91) fourth and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (77) fifth.

Fullerton had 51 points and four wrestlers finished fourth or better to advance to the NCAA tournament, starting March 19 at Cleveland State.

Besides Kim, Joey Coughran was fourth at 126 pounds, Jason Webster (167) and Jonathan DyReyes (190) also placed fourth for the Titans.

Stephen Neal, the heavyweight from Bakersfield, was the tournament’s most valuable wrestler. He beat Matt Orndorff of Oregon, 14-1, in the final.
