Campaign Gift Limit May Be Reimposed

In preparation for municipal elections in November, the City Council today will consider reestablishing a $500 limit on campaign gifts.
The cap would apply to candidates seeking three council seats in the upcoming election.
A similar limitation--also $500--was on the books until 1996 when state voters approved Proposition 208, which set a $100 limit for cities the size of Fountain Valley. As a result of the referendum, Fountain Valley repealed its law to comply.
Recent federal court rulings, however, deemed provisions of Proposition 208 unconstitutional, prompting the move to bring back the city’s old limits.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave.
