Titans Stop San Luis Obispo

Freshman right-hander Kirk Saarloos scattered four hits over five innings as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 12-1, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday in San Luis Obispo.

Saarloos (2-2), the first right-hander to start for the Titans this season, struck out seven and gave up one unearned run. Adam Johnson struck out six during three scoreless innings of relief, and Marco Hanlon pitched the ninth for Fullerton (17-6, 5-0). The three Fullerton pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.

Aaron Rowand’s bases-loaded triple in the fifth broke a 1-1 tie for the Titans. Cal Poly SLO falls to 6-18, 0-5.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Biola 11-9, Concordia 9-3 (2nd game, 7, time limit)--Biola (19-7) scored six runs in the first two innings of the first game and Concordia came back with seven runs in the seventh inning, but Biola’s Jonathon Jay’s two-run double in the eighth won it.

In the second game, Biola’s Chris Petinak broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run homer, which ignited a six-run sixth inning.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5-4, Sacramento State 2-6--Designated hitter Brenda Iglesias hit a two-run home run and Nikki Hart (2-4, 3 RBIs) doubled with the bases loaded as the Titans split a doubleheader at Sacramento State. Chrissy Hartman picked up the win to even her record at 3-3.

In the second game, Cal State Fullerton (10-12, 4-6) led, 4-3, but the Hornets rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and salvage a split. Donna Combes (4-4) took the loss for Cal State Fullerton.

In the Sun West softball tournament:

Concordia 7, Lehigh 6--Pitcher Alison Maya was able to hold on for her second victory of the season despite 15 hits and six runs by Lehigh (2-2). Maya had two hits and two runs for Concordia.

Michele Lara also had two hits for the Eagles (9-7).

Concordia lost an earlier game to Kean (N.J.), 9-8. Raeme Payne had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for Concordia. Crystal Rosenthal, Lanell Tucker and Lia Matsumura also had two hits each for the Eagles.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 6-3, CS Stanislaus 0-1--Gretchen Brandt struck out 13 and gave up two singles to earn her eighth win for Southern California College in the opening game. SCC’s Chrissy Vega was three for three with two runs.

In the second game, Jen Houston struck out 10 to earn her 11th win for SCC (20-4). Heather Rogers drove in two runs on two hits for the Vanguards.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 7, Biola 0--Jeff Baker swept his singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, and then teamed with Vu Phong to win a doubles match, 8-0, for Southern California College (8-3).
