A Long Beach truck driver died late Saturday when he lost control of his big rig on the Golden State Freeway and was ejected down a hillside, authorities said.

Martin Valle, 33, was driving south on the Golden State Freeway south of Templin Highway about 11:55 p.m. when the truck drifted to the right shoulder and onto a dirt embankment and struck a metal guardrail, said California Highway Patrol Officer Shirley Gaines.

The impact caused the truck to overturn and Valle was ejected down the hillside, she said.

He suffered severe head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Gaines said.
