Police officers were involved in two shootings that left one man dead and another wounded.

On Sunday morning, a Long Beach officer tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation, but the 21-year-old driver didn’t stop, investigators said. A license plate check showed that the vehicle had been stolen in Arizona, Long Beach police spokeswoman Karen Kerr Owens said.

Thirty minutes later, another officer spotted the car and tried to stop it. The driver sped away and crashed into three parked vehicles and an apartment building in the 1700 block of Magnolia Avenue, officials said.

The driver then left the car, ran north and refused orders to stop, police said.

When the man pulled out what appeared to be a gun and pointed it at three police officers, they fired, Owens said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was being withheld pending notification of relatives. Police said the weapon turned out to be a fake gun.

Later in the day, officers attempted to get a suicidal man to give up his knife at a home in the 2400 block of Seabright Avenue. When 27-year-old Bunhong Lourn lunged at officers, they fired and wounded him, authorities said.

Lourn was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition, police said.
