Barclay-Vous Francais?

Share

The small gathering of Irvine Barclay Theatre supporters Tuesday night probably never stopped to think about how they came to be some of the first to enjoy the food and drink of French 75, a new bistro and champagne bar in downtown Laguna Beach.

Most likely, they were preoccupied with gobbling hors d’oeuvres with unpronounceable names and enjoying conversation in front of the eatery’s fireplace.

So, just how did the Irvine Barclay pick this European-style restaurant, which is scheduled to officially open next week, for its “friend raiser”?

“They chose us,” says the Barclay’s Michele Roberge. “One of the restaurant’s three principals is Rudy Pollak, who is a member of our board. Rudy approached us two months ago, hoping he could meld his two loves--this theater and fine dining.

“We have a lot of events, and most are fund-raisers with a ticket price, but we try to do at least one social event each year. It’s a great way for members to bring friends and get them involved.”

The ambience seemed to appeal to guests, who said they enjoyed the intimate feel of the cottage-like restaurant. The menu scored well too.

Appetizers included escargot and chubby scallops, and entrees ranged from rack of lamb to sea bass with a glazed crust.
