Ortiz Is Making a Giant Move

Russell Ortiz, who went to Montclair Prep and is trying to stick with the San Francisco Giants, pitched four shutout innings in his first spring-training start Thursday against Milwaukee.

Ortiz, 23, was 4-3 with a 5.51 earned-run average last season at Phoenix. He was drafted in the fourth round out of the University of Oklahoma in 1995.


Sophomore shortstop Jack Wilson of Oxnard College committed to Texas Tech.

Wilson, who played at Thousand Oaks High, batted .308 with a school-record 21 doubles last season.

Track and Field

Tyree Washington, bronze medalist in the 400 meters in the 1997 World Championships in Athens, Greece, will run the 200 in the Northridge Invitational at Cal State Northridge today.
