Teacher Honored After Painful Year

Not even a painful kidney transplant operation could keep San Clemente High School’s 1998 Teacher of the Year, Andy Magana, away from guiding the members of his 107-member marching band.

Just a month after his 1997 operation, in which the director of the instrumental music department received his sister’s kidney, Magana was attending the Triton Marching Entertainment Unit’s rehearsals.

“As far as his students are concerned he is the teacher of the century,” parent Marsha Schwartze said. “This is a nice ending to an otherwise challenging year” for Magana.

Magana, 36, who has taught at the school since 1993, is one of five high school teachers, six middle school teachers and 28 elementary school teachers selected for honors in the Capistrano Unified School District.

The school district’s 10th Annual Teacher of the Year banquet will be held April 8 at the Marriott Laguna Cliffs Resort in Dana Point.
